Summer is coming and hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of coastal California. Due to large temperature variations between the coastal areas and inland valleys, the coast typically maintains fog throughout the day during the summer making it ideal for comfortable hiking. Locals commonly refer to this phenomenon as “May Gray,” “June Gloom,” “No Sky July,” & Fogust.
Nick’s location on Tomales Bay allows for perfect access to a huge variety of trails. Guests looking for slow easy strolls can take advantage of the many beautiful and expansive beaches, while those looking for more of a challenge may enjoy some of our suggestions below:
Tomales Point Trail Head is our most recommended hike to guests. The start of the trail is at Historic Pierce Point Ranch. This 9.4 mi. round trip out and back trail is the only place in the world where you can see Tule Elk. This hike can be adapted to be shorter and less strenuous by turning back at any point along the trail.
Heart’s Desire Beach is a beautiful protected beach with calm water that makes it perfect for swimming when the weather is nice. Several trails of varying skill levels begin near the parking lot for the beach making it a great destination for all day adventure.
If you’re up for a bit of a drive and a more challenging hike, Alamere Falls in Bolinas may be the place for you! The view of the 40 foot waterfall meeting the ocean is stunning! This is the most challenging hike on our list boasting a 13 mile+ trek, but the hard work on the trail is rewarded with the beauty of the falls.
Always prepare for your hike by packing the 10 essentials: navigation, sun protection, insulation (clothing layers), illumination, first aid supplies, fire starter, repair kit, nutrition and HYDRATION! Please note that most hiking trails in the area are not pet friendly. Due to the length of time spent hiking and variability of weather, it is also not advisable to leave pets in the car. Please plan ahead for your furry friends! Happy trekking friends!
